PREDATOR

Director: John McTiernan

U.S.A.| 1987. COLOUR. DOLBY STEREO. 35MM. 107 MIN.

While The Terminator may be his most iconic role, the character of Dutch in Predator provides what is probably Schwarzenegger’s best part, and certainly his finest performance. Essentially a twist on the ‘slasher’ formula, with added elements of action and sci-fi, the film follows Dutch and his Special Forces unit on a search and rescue mission in the jungles of Central America. It’s soon discovered that something else has found the target first, something which now turns its attention to the group of soldiers and has a distinct advantage over any mere human (even Arnie). Director John McTiernan (Die Hard) keeps the action moving at a brisk pace, ratcheting up the tension and building to a resolutely unsentimental climax (the bane of many a Schwarzenegger film), while a strong supporting cast gives the piece more of an ensemble feel than the presence of its star would otherwise suggest. Enjoy this 20th anniversary screening.
