JEZEBEL (EVENING COURSE: HEROIC GESTURES) Director: WILLIAM WYLER 104 minutes, U.S.A., 1938, Drama/Romance Book cinema tickets At a time when the lack of lead roles for women is regularly lamented, it’s worth looking back at Studio Era films featuring legendary female stars in complex characterisations. Bette Davis won an Oscar for her performance here as the eponymous Southern belle who flouts social norms in 1850s New Orleans. Noting how frequently films of the period understand heroism as sacrifice on the part of a morally “tarnished” figure, Professor Diane Negra (UCD) will consider Davis’ heroine and how the film’s treatment of her illuminates social constraints on female behaviour. This event is taking place as part of the IFI Evening Course, Heroic Gestures (February 4th – March 11th). Full course price: €60 (€55 concessions), including tea/coffee. Please book your place by calling Sharon Corrigan on 01 679 5744 or emailing scorrigan@irishfilm.ie (Individual tickets for films on this Course are not available.)
