Jaws

Director: Steven Spielberg

U.S.A.| 1975. Colour. Anamorphic. 124 min.

Spielberg’s classic is now celebrating its 30th anniversary. The East Coast resort of Amity Island is plagued by by a 28-foot great white shark. Although the mayor (Murray Hamilton) would like to keep the whole thing quiet, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled old shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) go after the monstrous creature. This remains Spielberg’s best film; it’s free of the sentimentality and the expert use of shock images, tight editing and a driving score remain surprisingly effective after all those years.
