Following their first encounter in Vienna in 1995’s Before Sunrise, and their subsequent meeting in Paris in 2004’s Before Sunset, we join Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) in Greece as they once again spend time together discussing life and love.

Much has changed in the years since the last instalment, most notably that they are now a couple, parents to twins. However, there are difficulties; Jesse wants to return to Chicago to be nearer to his son from his first marriage, while Céline is at a career crossroads.

As with the first two chapters, Before Midnight consists almost entirely of these two people simply talking to each other. However, the dialogue is so beautifully crafted, so funny, honest, and realistic that the film is incredibly engaging, and a fitting close to one of cinema’s finest portrayals of a relationship.
