Gregg Araki’s The Living End was shown at the IFI in 1993, the year homosexuality was decriminalised in Ireland. While mainstream media and society shied away from the issue of AIDS, Araki tackled it head on with this story of Jon, an L.A. movie critic, and Luke, a hustler, both of whom are HIV positive.

Young, handsome and doomed, the two hit the road for a series of encounters across America, some humorous, some much darker. This sense of doom pervades the film, and informs the fury shot through it aimed at the characters’ situation, and their treatment by society. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
