WILD STRAWBERRIES: THE HELP

Director: Tate Taylor

146 minutes, U.S.A., 2011, Drama

Wild Strawberries is our bimonthly film club for the over 55s.

Fresh from Oscar and Bafta successes (for Octavia Spencer as Best Supporting Actress) comes this drama based on the book-club favourite by Katherine Stockett. Set in 1960s’ Mississippi, when the Civil Rights movement is gaining sway, it centres on society life in which black women make significant but unremarked contributions to family life in their role as housekeepers.

Skeeter Phelan returns from college to her family home and, determined to be a writer, she gets work for the local paper. When she decides to interview the housekeepers, however, she causes uproar. The veneer of well-guarded respectability is removed when one woman after another comes forward to tell her story and Skeeter’s friends turn on her in their determination to conceal what really goes on behind their polished front doors.

€3.85 per person with complimentary tea/coffee before the screening.
