Along with fellow directors Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu brought international attention to the flourishing of new talent in Mexican cinema at the turn of the century. Amores Perros was the first of his collaborations with writer Guillermo Arriaga that, along with 21 Grams (2003) and Babel (2006), would form their ‘Trilogy of Death’. Like its successors, it is a sprawling tale in which disparate characters and stories are linked in many ways, and its gritty, brutal style made for an electrifying debut.
