LAST NIGHT

Director: DON MCKELLAR

95 mins, Canada-France, 1998, 35mm

The world will end at midnight. The reasons for its imminent demise remain unclear, the bright sunlight in the night sky being the only hint that all is not as it should be. In the months since the realisation was made and the countdown begun, humanity has passed through the stages of violent denial and despair and accepted its fate. In Toronto, Sandra (Sandra Oh) finds herself stranded, unable to reach husband Duncan (David Cronenberg), who is busily thanking his company’s clients for their custom; following a family dinner, Patrick (Don McKellar) wants to spend his final hours alone, but instead finds himself helping Sandra; and Patrick’s friend Craig (Callum Keith Rennie) is trying to fulfil his every sexual fantasy. McKellar’s film, inspired by pre-millennium tension, is a poignant, witty, and thought-provoking depiction of the end of it all.

The screening will be introduced by Dorian Lynskey.
