Cannibal Holocaust

Director: Ruggero Deodato

Italy| 1980 English dialogue. Colour. 95 min.

Possibly the most controversial film of all time, director Ruggero Deodato’s notorious Cannibal Holocaust pre-dates The Blair Witch Project by 20 years in its ‘mockumentary’ style of film-making. Four film-makers go missing in the Amazon jungle while making a documentary about cannibal tribes. An investigator comes across several rolls of film that contain a record of the terrible fate of the missing journalists. Deodato’s film is both intelligent and outrageous, raising a number of issues about violence and media manipulation while refusing to resolve any of the contradictions and paradoxes it throws up. Intending viewers should be aware that it features some of the most graphic scenes of rape and torture ever filmed, and these staged sequences are interspersed with footage of real live animals being killed and eaten.

Director Ruggero Deodato will be attending the screening.
