Adam and Paul

Director: Lenny Abrahamson

Irl| 2004| Drama| 86 mins| Director: Lenny Abrahamson

In the centenary year of Leopold Bloom’s walk around Dublin, first time feature director, Lenny Abrahamson, offers us a Ulysses for the 21st century. This groundbreaking film features best friends Adam and Paul who wander the city streets over the course of a day looking desperately for their next fix. Their search is for ‘what’s his name’, a possible contact who might just sort them out. In the meantime they meet a collection of people – old acquaintances who have cleaned up their acts, strangers who become easy prey, a group who mourn the death of a mutual friend.
This is a bleak and moving film, with hilarious moments that bring some relief from the characters’ increasingly desensitised world. The sparse dialogue has been acutely observed by Mark O’Halloran (Adam). With Tom Murphy as Paul, these two heroin addicts offer the viewer an unglamorous but gripping glimpse of lives we would usually ignore.
Director Lenny Abrahamson and actor/screenwriter Mark O’Halloran will attend our screening.
