Irish Film Institute -A Room with a View

A Room with a View

Another chance to see Merchant Ivory’s adaptation of EM Forster’s novel, this film is one of their most enduring period dramas. Shot on location in England and Florence, it is especially memorable for the performances of Helena Bonham-Carter as Lucy Honeychurch, Simon Callow as Mr Beeb and Maggie Smith as Charlotte Bartlett.

Lucy arrives in Florence with cousin Charlotte, for their ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe. Also in town are the Emersons, father and son, and the novelist Eleanor Lavish. Their views and lifestyles are so in contrast with Lucy’s that the encounter causes her life to forever and she is forced on her return to England to make some major decisions.

The film is ideal for study of characters and for examination of social setting and context.
