THE BIGGER PICTURE: SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS

Director: Preston Sturges

90 mins, USA, 1941, 35mm

This film screened 28th November 2016.

Preston Sturges’s brilliant satire on Hollywood sees Joel McCrea star as John L. Sullivan, a successful director of shallow comedies who suddenly grows a social conscience and decides to make a film (whose name should be familiar to fans of the Coen Brothers) on the plight of the downtrodden, which he researches by going on the road as a hobo. Also starring Veronica Lake, it’s one of the great comedies of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

This month’s Bigger Picture will be introduced by Anna Taylor, creator of Film Fatale, event-cinema producer, and former programmer of the Screen Cinema.
