An animated feature, The Secret of Kells creates a gorgeously realised vision of a medieval Ireland wherein a young monk battles monsters and Vikings to help complete the Book of Kells. Brendan (Evan McGuire) chafes against the restrictions of his Uncle, Abbot Cellach (Brendan Gleeson), and comes to the aid of master illustrator Brother Aidan (Mick Lally), who needs him to seek out the tools needed to finish the book. With dangers presented by both Abbot Cellach and other, more deadly opponents, Brendan befriends animals and fairies whose skills help protect him on his quest. The Secret of Kells’ greatest strength is the lovingly crafted animation that incorporates elements of Celtic art and indeed of the Book of Kells itself into its design. This high standard, produced by the multi-award winning Cartoon Saloon, garnered the film praise upon release and The Secret of Kells was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
