A stark portrait of an isolated man Garage centres on Josie (Pat Shortt), the sole employee of a rural garage, in this nuanced portrait of male loneliness in the Irish midlands. Living a monotonous existence built around his job, it becomes apparent that Josie struggles to grasp social conventions when he starts drinking with a teenage boy hired to work at the garage. His trips into the local town make Josie’s failings more apparent as he is appears oblivious to the abuse found in the pub and misunderstands the friendship offered by a local woman. Stumbling through these difficulties of life, a series of events which are beyond his understanding or control conspire to overturn the stability that allows him to live in peace.

Director Lenny Abrahamson approaches this material with a conviction to show rather than tell and although it consciously shies away from directness Garage remains grounded in painful, real-world truths.
