Starring, produced, and directed by Anjelica Huston, Agnes Browne is a feel-good working-class drama about its embattled protagonist keeping her family’s head above water. In the aftermath of her husband’s death Agnes (Huston) uses the exorbitant fees offered by loan sharks to hold affairs together for herself and her seven children. Her poise is continually tested as bad luck, mistakes, and tragedy upset her efforts, and beneath her composure Agnes dreams of an escape from this everyday struggle. Featuring a cameo from Tom Jones, this portrait of a working-class hero is more family-drama than kitchen-sink realism, with its humour drawn strongly from its source novel, written by comedian Brendan O’Carroll. However those familiar with Mrs Brown’s Boys, O’Carroll’s television version of the Agnes Browne character, should expect something far more grounded.
