This feature documentary tells the stories of Ulrike Meinhof and Fusako Shigenobu – revolutionary women who emerged from the student movements in Germany and Japan in 1968 to become leaders of the Baader Meinhof group and the Japanese Red Army. Fuelled by the killing in Vietnam, they set out to destroy capitalist power through world revolution. Their daughters Bettina Röhl and May Shigenobu explore the lives of their mothers, and describe their own extraordinary childhoods, lived in exile from their mothers. Through a wealth of archive footage and key witness testimony, the film explodes the mythology that has developed around two of the most notorious women in contemporary history. This is the second documentary feature from Irish director Shane O’Sullivan, following 2007’s RFK Must Die: The Assassination of Bobby Kennedy.
