Potent in its combination of psychological horror and dark predictions of social collapse Citadel is one of a series of recent Irish low-budget horror films. Living in a dilapidated high-rise flat, Tommy (Aneurin Barnard) is forced to watch his pregnant girlfriend Joanne (Amy Shiels) being attacked by a pack of feral youths. With Joanne surviving only long enough to give birth to their daughter, Tommy becomes the agoraphobic sole carer of their child. Only nurse Marie (Wunmi Mosaku) and an unnamed eschatological priest (James Cosmo) take an interest in Tommy; the former encouraging him to step back out into the world; the latter convinced something more sinister is going on. Turning contemporary fears about communal disintegration to his own end, first-time feature director Ciarán Foy crafts a bleak piece of socially-despairing horror.
