BERLIN 36

Director: Kaspar Heidelbach

Germany, 2011, Drama, 100min, English subtitles

Among the many films dealing with the Third Reich are some recent titles that look at the impact of the regime on individuals’ lives. This story concerns the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, which Hitler regarded as an opportunity to promote an idea of racial supremacy. But under threat of international boycott, Jewish athletes were allowed to try for places on the teams. Jewish high jumper Gretel Bergmann must compete against the authorities’ choice, Marie, who is in fact a man. An unlikely friendship strikes up between the two athletes as they find themselves for very different reasons on the outside.
