THE HANGOVER LOUNGE: MATINEE

Director: JOE DANTE

99mins, USA, 1993, Blu-ray

This film screened 13th November 2016.

Our monthly indulgent Sunday afternoon of brunch and a classic film.

Joe Dante’s (Gremlins, The ‘Burbs) love letter to the B-movies of the 1950s and ‘60s is something of a lost treasure. Set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis, teenager Gene lives with his mother and brother on a military base while his father serves in the Navy. A huge fan of horror and sci-fi, he is thrilled by the news that filmmaker Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman, in a role clearly meant as tribute to filmmaker William Castle) will attend a screening of his new film, Mant! (“Half Man! Half Ant!”). Playful, witty, and extremely charming, it’s a heartfelt ode to the power of cinema. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)

Brunch + film €16; film only is normal IFI pricing. Sunday brunch is served 12pm – 4pm.
