Winter’s Children—The Silent Generation

Director: Jens Schanze

Germany| 2005. English subtitles. Colour. Dolby stereo. 99 min.

Germany has gone to great lengths to educate its citizens about the Holocaust and its Nazi past. Still, according to a recent poll almost 50% of Germans believe that their own ancestors were opposed to Hitler and Nazism. What kind of dialogue takes place within German families to lead to such mass denial? In this award-winning documentary, film-maker Jens Schanze focuses on his own family to answer the question. Sixty years after the end of World War II, he attempts to reconstruct the character of his grandfather, and through him that of an entire generation. What kind of values were communicated by the parents who had grown up with the ideology of National Socialism and who as children were traumatised by the war?
