WILD STRAWBERRIES: THE BIG YEAR

Director: DAVID FRANKEL

100 minutes, U.S., 2011, Comedy

Wild Strawberries is our bimonthly film club for the over 55s.

One might wonder what studio executive thought up the idea of bringing together three of Hollywood’s top comic actors in a film about bird watching, but then The Big Year, a real competition to spot the greatest number of birds in a single year, attracts a whole host of adventurers across North America and offers characters and motivations diverse enough for these three very different stars. Criss-crossing across North America in pursuit of rare birds and migration patterns, there’s adventure and soul-searching as the contest becomes gruelling, expensive and highly competitive.

Jack Black is Brad, unemployed and eager, and narrator of the story. Owen Wilson is Kenny, the record-holder whose home-life is a bit stressful and Steve Martin is the newly-retired Stu. The three vie for birds – and screen space – in this somewhat unusual comedy set against beautiful landscapes.

€3.85 including regular tea/coffee before the screening.
