WILD STRAWBERRIES: SECRETS AND LIES

Director: Mike Leigh

146 minutes| France/U.K.| 1996

With Oscar and Bafta eyes on Mike Leigh’s film Another Year, it’s an ideal time to watch the last truly great film from this master chronicler of ordinary lives. In a heartbreaking performance, Brenda Blethyn is Cynthia, whose adopted daughter, Hortense, gets in contact. A successful black optometrist of whom Cynthia has no knowledge, she meets with a cold reception. For Cynthia, life is tough enough with her other daughter Roxanne, but her photographer brother (Timothy Spall) slowly begins to uncover the secrets and lies under which they have all lived for so many years. Wonderful, sympathetic and life-affirming, with scathing one-liners and tear-jerking moments, this family drama is not to be missed.

€4 including regular tea/coffee.

This screening will include a 6-minute Irish short, Deep End Dance. Made for RTE’s Dance on the Box series, it features Wild Strawberries member, Madge Bolger, and was written and choreographed by her son, David. Directed by Conor Horgan.
