The setting is the close-knit working-class neighbourhood of Rockaway, New York, where a warm, crazy Jewish family lives, sharing their happiness as well as their disappointments. The youngest member of the family is Joe, who dreams of the glamour and excitement of Manhattan as conjured up by the radio programmes he and his family listen to each night. The film weaves tales of everyday family life with glimpses of the glittering world of established and aspiring radio celebrities. Allen captures the look and feel of the time marvellously, and the music is a joy to listen to. This month’s film has been chosen by Wild Strawberries Film Club member Brian Conway. We are delighted that Mr. Conway will be introducing the screening on June 25th.
