WILD STRAWBERRIES: LE HAVRE

Director: Aki Kaurismäki

93 minutes, 2011, Comedy/Drama, English subtitles

Wild Strawberries is our bi-monthly film club for the over 55s.

The latest feature from Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki sees the folk of the Normandy port town band together to protect a Congolese teenage refugee from the authorities. Having arrived in France on a container ship along with others bound for London, the boy Idrissa is discovered by Marcel, a former bohemian novelist turned shoe-shiner. Marcel sets about hiding the boy, in particular from tough inspector Monet, the brilliant Jean-Pierre Darroussin who hilariously sleuths around town in his overcoat and hat.

The director’s trademark deadpan style doesn’t take from the serious point he is making about the treatment of illegal immigrants to Europe in this beautifully-acted drama.

€3.85 per person including regular tea or coffee before the screening. Please note: Wild Strawberries is our film club for over 55s. If you are lucky enough to look younger, please don’t take offence if we ask your age.
