WILD STRAWBERRIES: HOPE SPRINGS

Director: David Frankel

100 minutes, U.S.A., 2012, Comedy/Drama/Romance

Wild Strawberries is our bi-monthly film club for the over 55s.

Who would have thought that pairing the much-loved and gorgeous Meryl Streep with the equally-admired but invariably curmudgeonly-character-playing Tommy Lee Jones could yield this amusing yet thoughtful comedy about a couple trying to resurrect their 30-year relationship.

The director of The Devil Wears Prada manages to get great comic timing from Streep as the put upon Kay who, blushing and skittish, hopes that a week-long residential relationship counselling course will succeed in taking accountant husband Arnold away from the Golf Channel and into her arms.

Steve Carrell plays straight as the therapist who endeavours to bridge the communication gap between the long-suffering pair. While the characterisation and plot occasionally veers on the stereotypical, the chemistry between the two leads makes it all highly watchable.

€3.85 per person including regular tea or coffee before the screening. Please note: Wild Strawberries is our film club for over 55s. If you are lucky enough to look younger, please don’t take offence if we ask your age.
