WILD STRAWBERRIES: BEALTAINE FILM TOUR: THE SAPPHIRES

103 minutes, Australia, 2012, Biography/Comedy/Drama/Musical

Wild Strawberries is our bimonthly film club for the over 55s.

The annual Bealtaine film tour in conjunction with Access Cinemas gets a head start here at IFI with this lively and pleasing tale of a 1960s’ Aboriginal girl group.

Starring Chris O’Dowd as the haphazard, boozy manager who takes them on, he persuades them to sing soul music and secures them a gig entertaining the U.S. troops in Vietnam. Although pretty light on politics, the film offers big musical moments and plenty of humour; it doesn’t shy away from questions of race or identity either as the girls find themselves confronting prejudice as their star begins to rise. The hugely likable O’Dowd shows us, yet again, that the Boyle lad has certainly earned his place on the big screen.

€3.85 per person including regular tea or coffee before the screening. Please note: Wild Strawberries is our film club for over 55s. If you are lucky enough to look younger, don’t take offence if we ask your age.
