ADAPTED FROM IAN MCEWAN’S NOVEL, ATONEMENT IS A TOUR DE FORCE OF BRITISH FILMMAKING. DIRECTOR JOE WRIGHT (PRIDE AND PREJUDICE) HAS ACHIEVED SOMETHING VERY RARE – A SENSITIVE LITERARY ADAPTATION WHICH IS ALSO A TRUE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE.
The film opens on a warm summer day in 1935 at an English manor house. 13-year-old Briony (Saoirse Ronan), a budding writer with an active imagination, is carefully observing but not quite understanding the behaviour of the adults around her. She witnesses two highly charged encounters between her older sister Cecilia (Kiera Knightley) and the cook’s son Robbie Turner (James McAvoy) which leads to a misunderstanding and a false accusation that will change the course of all their lives forever.
