Introverted Bobo and her garrulous, extrovert friend Klara are misfits at their school, and still believe punk’s not dead in 1982 Sweden. After accidentally starting a band, they commit to the idea, and recruit fellow outsider Hedvig, a devout Christian and classically-trained guitarist. The girls, all about 13, and at slightly but significantly different levels of emotional maturity, bond, argue, fall apart, and come back together in ways that will be familiar to audiences, and seeing them find themselves through music is another idea bound to resonate.

After his more experimental films of recent years, director Lukas Moodysson here returns to the looser, warm-hearted tone and style of his earlier work, particularly Fucking Åmål (1998) and Together (2000), adapting his wife Coco’s graphic novel to create this absolute delight.
