TIMECRIMES

Director: Nacho Vigalondo

SPAIN • 2007 • SUBTITLED • COLOUR • DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO • 88 MIN

Already tipped for an inevitably inferior Hollywood makeover, Spanish writer-director Nacho Vigalondo’s small-yet-perfectly-formed gem is a textbook exercise in smart, sharp and provocative low-budget genre moviemaking. We like Vigalondo’s own synopsis of events: ‘A man travels accidentally back to the past and meets himself there. A naked girl in the midst of the forest. A weird guy with his face covered by a pink bandage. A disquieting mansion on the top of a hill. All of them pieces of an unpredictable jigsaw puzzle where terror, drama and suspense will lead to an unthinkable sort of crime. Who’s the murderer? Who’s the victim?’ All you truly need to know is this: Timecrimes announces the arrival of a major new talent and it might just be Horrorthon’s favourite movie of 2008.
