Things That Make Life Worth Living

Director: Manuel Gomez

Spain| 2004. English subtitles. Colour. Anamorphic. Dolby digital stereo. 86 min.

A strong return to comedy by director Manuel Gomez Pereira, this autumnal romance stars Eduard Fernandez as Jorge, a divorced and unemployed former alcoholic who hasn’t lost his belief in good luck. Deciding that today his fortunes will improve, he meets Hortensia (Ana Belen), an older divorcee who’s keeping an eye open for available men. Can she take a chance on this younger stranger, who has a conviction for a drunk driving accident? The central question of whether or not this unlikely pair is together because of love or loneliness is given reflective treatment in a film armed with a lively script, good performances and a stunning 10-minute sequence near the end that’s alone worth the price of admission.
