IFI French Film Festival 2020: THE WOMAN WHO DARED

Director: Jean Grémillion

105 mins, France, 1944, Digital, Subtitled, Black and White

The Gauthier family – Pierre, his wife Thérèse, their two children, and Thérèse’s mother – leave the old country garage they have been running for years to settle in a nearby town. Thérèse suddenly develops a passion for flying, aided by Pierre, a former fighter pilot. With a screenplay by Charles Spaak, The Woman Who Dared is inspired by real-life aviatrixes. Beautifully shot in a realistic documentary style, it is considered by many to be Grémillon’s masterpiece. The film includes wonderful performances from Madeleine Renaud and Charles Vanel.
