Abbas Kiarostami’s Close-Up (1990) is one of very few reference points available for artist Anna Odell’s multi-layered blending of fact and fiction in her complex, affecting, and gripping study of how one relates to one’s own past. Odell discovered that the bullying she endured throughout her childhood had followed her into adulthood when she was the only member of her class not to be invited to a 20th anniversary reunion. As catharsis, she created the first part of The Reunion, in which she attends a fictionalised version of the event and confronts her tormentors, puncturing the atmosphere of camaraderie as old roles are resumed and she once again becomes the pariah.

The second part features staged re-enactments of her screening this version of events for her former classmates, whose reactions sometimes prove even more venomous than Odell had imagined. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
