Director Przemyslaw Wojcieszek’s fourth feature mixes different styles and genres in a tale involving two generations of troubled lovers. Young Gliwice residents Mikolaj (a charismatic Michal Czernecki) and Anna (Magdalena Poplawska) are more interested in getting their publishing business off the ground than planning their forthcoming marriage. Meanwhile, Mikolaj’s father, Andrzej (the great Jerzy Stuhr), asks his ex-wife to be his date for their son’s wedding, despite the fact that they split up 12 years ago when his passion for Solidarity came between them. The film is at its most interesting when the characters are bickering about patriotism, politics and the ethics of emigration. ‘What am I gong to do in Ireland?’ asks Mikolaj at one point. ‘I suspect there is little interest for published contemporary Polish literature there.’
