THE OVERNIGHT

Director: PATRICK BRICE

80 MINUTES, USA, 2015, COLOUR, D-CINEMA.

Alex (Adam Scott) and Emily (Taylor Schilling) are a married couple with a young son who have moved to Los Angeles from Seattle. They are eager to explore their neighbourhood and keen to make new friends, so a chance meeting with the eccentrically chapeaued Kurt (Jason Schwartzman) leads to them to accept an invitation to a family pizza night at the home Kurt shares with his gorgeous French wife Charlotte (Judith Godrèche) and their own young son.

As the night draws on and the kids are put to bed, the couples become increasingly revealing, with Kurt and Charlotte casually provoking their new friends to open up. Brice’s insightful indie gem is funny and frank about thirty-something sexual manners and depicts LA living as curious and bizarre, a la-la land existence detached from reality. It is a terrifically unsettling comedy, a film that will make viewers laugh and squirm in equal measure. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
