THE MOON AND OTHER LOVERS

Director: BERND BÖHLICH

GERMANY • 2008 • SUBTITLED • COLOUR DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO • 35MM • 101 MIN

This entertaining tragicomedy is first and foremost a vehicle for the considerable talents of Katharina Thalbach, one of Germany’s most respected actors. Here she plays Hanna, a strong-willed woman who refuses to take life’s knocks sitting down. Instead, she takes them in her stride and marches onward.

When the cosmetics factory where she works goes bankrupt, Hanna simply helps herself to boxes full of perfume. As life and politics change around her, principally the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, Hanna battles on until she meets the great love of her life, Gansar (Birol Uenel). Gansar’s presence seems to turn her home into a paradise. However, Hanna is in for a shock when she discovers that despite his promises, Gansar is a married man who has two kids. Hanna’s desperation leads to a very public scene and personal tragedy. However, true to form, she picks herself up and starts over in new hope. Thalbach is outstanding as the indomitable Hanna.
