This is the Japanese sequel to one of last year’s most acclaimed festival titles (the American remake is another of this year’s highlights). Working on a larger budget, director Takashi Shimizu takes the haunted house from the first film and spreads its curse to the cast and crew of a TV programme that’s attempting to exploit the phenomenon. Like its predecessor, Grudge 2 creates its creepy, unsettling effects through a careful use of sounds and images rather than gore or special effects.
