THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Director: DAVID FINCHER

160 minutes, U.S.A.-Sweden-U.K.-Germany, 2011, Colour, D-Cinema

This film was released 12th March 2010 and is no longer screening.

One of the most eagerly-awaited films of the year, director David Fincher’s follow-up to The Social Network is a new version of the first book in Stieg Larsson’s phenomenally successful Millennium crime-novel trilogy. Scriptwriter Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) and Fincher have gone back to Larsson’s original rather than the 2009 Swedish film adaptation, whose chief distinction was Noomi Rapace’s fine performance as the titular heroine. In Fincher’s film, the key role of Lisbeth Salander is taken by Rooney Mara (barely recognisable from the girlfriend dumping Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network). An androgynous, bisexual computer hacker with body piercings and a distinctive tattoo, Lisbeth is an extraordinary avenging angel with an understanding and appreciation of violence.

She makes a great Fincher character when teamed up with Daniel Craig’s Mikael Blomkvist, the compromised investigative journalist who uncovers dark family secrets, sadistic murder and worse. It’s the kind of edgy, even shocking material that inspired such Fincher classics as Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac. (Notes by Peter Walsh.)
