Irish Film Institute -THE FOURTH WALL SYMPOSIUM

THE FOURTH WALL SYMPOSIUM

Speakers to include: François Penz, Reader in Architecture and the Moving Image, University of Cambridge; Richard Koeck, University of Liverpool; Douglas Smith, University College Dublin; Daniel Jewesbury; Nicky Gogan, Still Films; and Lisa Godson, GradCAM/NCAD.

This symposium provides an opportunity to reappraise the agency of architecture through the medium of film. While attending to the richness of strategies for using the moving image to represent the built environment, speakers will address how architecture, broadly interpreted, is cast as a protagonist, thereby determining action, psychological effects and affect. Central to this event will be how the moving image cultivates not only a formal understanding of buildings, but also a richer perception of our lived world – our streets, cities and wider topographies of inhabitation.

Co-organised by GradCAM, UCD and IAF, in partnership with the IFI and with the support of the French Embassy.
Convened by Lisa Godson and Samantha Martin-McAuliffe.
