Winner of the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, Taxi Tehran is the third film incarcerated director Jafar Panahi and his supporters have smuggled out of Iran to international acclaim. Under house arrest on charges of propaganda against the Iranian government, the director has adopted a DIY approach to disseminate his humanist message.

On this occasion the conceit is that the great director is reduced to driving a cab, and not a very nice one given the reaction of his niece, who proceeds to wryly educate him in the rules for making a ‘distributable’ film, one of which is to avoid what she calls “sordid realism.”

Driving around Tehran, actors, non-professionals and friends improvise roles chosen to highlight themes of injustice and inequality; set entirely within his car, Taxi Tehran recalls the work of Abbas Kiarostami, of whom Panahi was once a protégé. Notes by David O’Mahony.

Don’t forget we now schedule weekly.
