STORM WARRIORS

Director: OXIDE PANG & DANNY PANG

112 minutes| Hong Kong| 2009| Subtitled| Colour| Anamorphic| Dolby Digital Stereo EX| 35mm

A Hong Kong season simply wouldn’t be complete without at least one FX-laden martial arts extravaganza, and the Pang brothers’ eagerly-anticipated sequel to the 1998 smash hit The Storm Riders delivers in spades. Back on home turf after an uninspiring Hollywood sojourn, the Pangs (The Eye, Bangkok Dangerous) bring their inspired technical virtuosity to this unashamed crowd-pleaser, which is guaranteed to delight and dazzle in equal measure. The brothers make no bones about their desire to ape Zach Snyder’s 300; shooting entirely on blue-screen, they gleefully translate the kinetic intensity of Manga comic books to live-action cinema. In this adaptation of Ma Wing-shing’s much-loved Manga series, returning heroes Cloud (Aaron Kwok) and Wind (Ekin Cheng) once again tackle the evil Lord Godless (Simon Yam) and his minions. Truth be told, any and all plot dynamics take a back seat to some of the most jaw-dropping sword-fu ever committed to film. Truly awesome stuff.
