Last Train Home is an emotionally engaging and visually stunning debut film from Chinese-Canadian director Lixin Fan. It draws us into the fractured lives of a single migrant family, the Zhangs, attempting to be reunited while caught up in a desperate annual migration. Every Chinese New Year, the country’s cities are plunged into chaos as all at once countless workers make the journey from the new industrial areas to their villages in the provinces. Fan’s film tells an intimate and heart-wrenching story of one family’s experience in new China, while exploring the massive social changes taking place in the country as a whole. One of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, it recently won the prestigious VPRO IDFA Award for best feature-length documentary.
