Someone I Loved

Director: Zabou Breitman

France • 2009 • 112 minutes

Based on Anna Gavalda’s novel of the same name, Someone I Loved is an unabashedly sentimental, old-fashioned romantic melodrama. It stars Daniel Auteuil and Marie-Josee Croze (also in Hidden Diary) as Pierre and Mathilde, illicit lovers engaged in a passionate affair. Chloe, Pierre’s daughter-in-law, has recently separated from her husband after learning he has been unfaithful. As a means of escape, Pierre takes her and her two young daughters to a remote cottage in the country and it is here that, in a bid to ease the distraught Chloe’s suffering, he recounts his relationship with the younger woman he fell deeply in love with many years before. Chloe listens intently as he charts the highs and lows of this intense romance, as well as his deep regrets.
