SAW V

Director: David Hackl

USA • 2008 • COLOUR • DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO • 90 MIN

You’ve got to hand it to the grimly fiendish minds behind this seemingly unstoppable franchise; whereas the majority of horror sequels swiftly degenerate into mere pastiche, coupled with a wry contempt for its loyal audience, the Saw series continues to delve deeper into the darker morasses of the human soul. This time out, a new director cracks the whip — appropriately enough, it’s regular production designer David Hackl, the man behind the grisly torture devices used by Saw’s iconic Jigsaw Killer (Tobin Bell). Fans will be pleased to know that the death of Jigsaw in Saw III — seemingly for good, another anomaly in modern horror cinema — hasn’t stemmed the endless slaughter by inventive mechanical means, and Saw V tries its utmost to out-gross its predecessors. Saw VI? It’s already in pre-production, naturally.
