Sacrifice, The

Director: Andrei Tarkovsky

Made as a Swedish production, Andrei Tarkovsky’s last film asks what the artist could do in the nuclear age. When a TV broadcast announces that a major nuclear crisis has occurred, an artist offers a prayer to God: reverse the events of the day and he will sacrifice all that he values. Although it is full of the director’s typically enigmatic poetry, this is Tarkovsky’s most accessible film and perhaps his most hopeful. There is still time, disaster can be averted, humanity might still aspire to a new spirituality and selflessness.
