Director: JEAN-PIERRE & LUC DARDENNE

Belgium-France| 1999 • Subtitled • Colour • Dolby stereo SR •94 min.

A revelation of cinematic realism that deservedly won the Dardenne brothers their first Palme d’or at Cannes, this centres on the titular teenager whose is trying to hold down mundane jobs while tending to a promiscuous, alcoholic mother with whom she shares a caravan on the edge of town. A boy seems to like her, but is life worth living anyway? Using long, handheld tracking shots and minimal dialogue, the Dardennes subtly but eloquently convey the instability and loneliness of their far-from-glamorised heroine’s existence. The ending— characteristically modest but graced with mystery — is quite sublime.
