ROCK’N’ROLL CINEMA: LEE SCRATCH PERRY’S VISION OF PARADISE

Director: Volker Schaner

100 mins, Germany-UK-Switzerland-Jamaica-Ethiopia, 2015, Digital

This film screened 27th February 2016.

For 15 years, director Volker Schaner followed Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, legendary godfather of reggae and dub, gaining unprecedented access and insight into the life and mind of one of music’s most eccentric figures. Following his early years in Jamaica’s nascent music industry, Perry took control, producing and releasing records by The Upsetters on his own label, and ultimately building his own studio, the Black Ark.

Perry came to international attention when The Upsetters evolved into The Wailers, led by Bob Marley. Nearing 80, Perry is a revered figure, still releasing vital music, and Schaner’s documentary is a fitting tribute to the man and his career.
