Fans of tasty vampire soap opera True Blood won’t want to miss this gritty (and grisly) little Australian siege flick, which stars Ryan Kwanten – that’s right fangbangers, Jason Stackhouse is actually an Aussie! Red Hill is an impressively mean and moody contemporary outback western, with allusions to everything from Shane Meadows’ Dead Man’s Shoes to John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13. Young city cop Shane Cooper (Kwanten) takes a new post in the sleepy town of Red Hill, with his pregnant wife Alice (Claire van der Boom) in tow; the quiet life simply isn’t an option, however, when escaped Aboriginal murderer Jimmy Conway (Tom E. Lewis) rolls into town, seeking bloody revenge. Leading man Kwanten proves once and for all that he isn’t just a pretty face, essaying a convincing transformation from idealistic newbie to hardened man of action: this stylish, well-built morality tale offers further proof that the Aussie b-movie industry is alive and kicking serious arse.
