Real, The Movie

Director: Borja Manso

SPAIN • 2005 • SUBTITLED • COLOUR • DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO • 91 MIN.

The first full-length film to be produced by a soccer club, this is an ambitious hybrid that’s part feature, part documentary and part love letter. Five short stories are interspersed with plenty of on-field action and behind-the-scenes footage. The stories vary in quality and interest, with the last two instalments emerging as the strongest. The first of these unearths a fascinating footnote to Real history involving the 1960s kidnapping of star Alfredo Di Stefano. The finale, also based on truth, is set among the scenic splendours of Senegal, where a man walks for two days every week to get to a TV where he can watch the team in action. Director Borja Manso makes liberal use of split-screen techniques to suggest the interconnectedness of everything and reinforce the notion of Real Madrid as a global brand. The action footage is thrilling.
