RADHARC FILMS – TALK BY NELL MCCAFFERTY
The Radharc Team produced over 400 documentaries for RTE between 1961 and 1996.
OPEN PORT (1968) This controversial film looks at prostitution along Cork City’s quays. Hidden cameras documented the women – some as young as 14 – going on board ships, sparking a debate that ran for months in the national papers. As a result of the controversy, the film was never broadcast.
YOUNG OFFENDERS (1964) Made at Saint Patrick’s institution for young offenders, this was the first film to be made inside an Irish prison. It features interviews with both prison inmates and staff, with closing comments from the then Minister for Justice, Charles J. Haughey.
