QUARANTINE

Director: John Erick Dowdle

USA • 2008 • COLOUR • DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO • 89 MIN

While it’s understandable to be more than a little sceptical when it comes to the latest Hollywood remake of a hardcore foreign horror classic, this speedily made American version of 2007’s acclaimed Spanish chiller [REC] delivers the goods with grizzly aplomb. When a TV news reporter (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) follow an L.A. fire crew on a routine distress call, they unwittingly find themselves quarantined in a locked-down apartment building with a serious infection problem that’s turning the residents into homicidal maniacs. Like its Spanish predecessor, Quarantine gleefully combines elements from David Cronenberg’s Shivers and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later with the ‘found footage’ aesthetic of The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield; the results make for one hell of a rollercoaster ride.
